Ruhender Löwe, 1864. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten rechts signiert und datiert. 40,5x59,5 cm. -Zwei kleine, alt restaurierte Leinwanddefekte.

Eine der seltenen Löwendarstellungen Rudolf Koller's. Als Vorlage diente wohl die Bleistiftzeichnung "Ruhender Löwe", 1851/55, aus dem Skizzenbuch P 65, welches mit einer grösseren Gruppe von Skizzenbüchern 1905 aus dem Nachlass Koller's in den Besitz der Grafischen Sammlung des Kunsthauses Zürich gelangt ist.
Koller litt öfters unter Minderwertigkeitsgefühlen und Melancholie, welche er duch die Wahl von kraftvollen Bildmotiven überwand. Anhand der Wiederkehr der Löwenmotive im Abstand von Jahren kann man erkennen, dass er sie immer in Zeiten von Entmutigung und Misserfolg malte. Das vorliegende Gemälde entstammt, nach 1851/55, einer zweiten Gruppe von Löwendarstellungen aus dem Jahre 1864. Koller suchte in dieser Zeit nach einer Bereicherung seiner Ausdrucksmittel und ging unter dem Einfluss der französischen Malerei einem bedeutungsvollen Stilwandel entgegen.
