514. Narwalzahn
Schraubenförmig gewundener Schneidezahn eines männlichen Narwals (Monodon monoceros). L 109 cm.
- Spitze abgebrochen, stellenweise Abschürfungen.
Provenienz: Seit über 50 Jahren in Schweizer Privatbesitz.
Seit der Zeit um 1200 wurde der Narwalzahn als Horn des legendären Einhorns betrachtet, dessen Existenz durch diesen einzigen greifbaren Nachweis gesichert schien. Da die Kirchenväter und andere Autoren die Einhornjagd mit der Menschwerdung Christi durch die Jungfrau Maria gleichsetzten, gelangten Narwalzähne als Reliquien in den Besitz vieler Kirchen. Dem "Horn" des Einhorns wurde zudem die Wirkung als Antidot nachgesagt. So sollten Trinkgefässe aus dem seltenen Zahn Gift anzeigen oder neutralisieren. Im 14. Jahrhundert begannen auch weltliche Herrscher, die wertvollen Narwalzähne in ihre Kunst- und Schatzkammern aufzunehmen.
